What Is a Birth Chart and How Is It Calculated?

A birth chart, also called a natal chart, records where every planet stood at the exact moment and place of your birth. Enter your birth date, time, and location above, and this free calculator computes the complete picture with no signup required: the Sun, Moon, and every planet by sign, degree, and house, plus your Ascendant, Midheaven, and the aspects that connect them. You also get your Big Three, the Sun, Moon, and rising sign that together form the core of any classical reading.

Precision is not a luxury here: the Ascendant shifts about one degree every four minutes, and a different birth city changes the houses entirely. That is why the engine behind this page is the Swiss Ephemeris, built from NASA JPL data and accurate to a fraction of an arcsecond. By default the chart uses the tropical zodiac and Placidus houses, the standard conventions of Western astrology. The readings themselves are classical and descriptive, not predictive: they explain what each placement has traditionally signified rather than forecasting events. Once your chart appears, start with your Big Three, then explore every placement on the interactive wheel, right on this page.

What does a birth chart reading look like?

In this sample chart the Sun is in Capricorn, the Moon in Scorpio, and the Ascendant in Aries; below is the full computed placement list with two aspect readings.

Aspects

Sun Trine Saturn

The easy flow between your Sun and Saturn lets discipline and your sense of self feed each other. Early responsibility did not crush you; it gave structure and self-reliance. Teachers, bosses, and mentors tend to invest in you. Patience, planning, and long-term thinking come naturally; you learn gladly from older people. The risk is being too serious, reading everything as duty and missing play. Mix discipline with light creativity; this opens mature, warm, lasting leadership.

Moon Square Uranus

The square between your Moon and Uranus rubs your need for safety against your need for freedom. Your mother may have been distant or unpredictable, warm one day and far the next. Emotional safety can still feel uncertain. Even now, when you get close, you quietly create reasons to step back, and stress throws your feelings off balance. The risk is a constant push and pull, with moods that stay shaky. You grow through steady routines, therapy, and balancing freedom with closeness on purpose.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the birth chart calculator free?

Yes, completely. You can calculate your full birth chart, with your Sun, Moon, rising sign, all ten planets, the twelve houses, and the major aspects, without signing up and without any payment.

Do I need my exact birth time?

For your rising sign and the house positions, yes, because even a few minutes can shift them. Without a birth time you still get accurate Sun and planet signs, but the rising sign and houses may be off. If your time is unknown, enter your best estimate now and refine it later.

What is a rising sign (ascendant)?

The rising sign is the zodiac sign that was climbing over the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. It sets the layout of your houses and colors how you meet the world. The calculator shows it as soon as you enter an accurate birth time and place.

Which house system does the calculator use?

The chart is drawn with Placidus by default, the most widely used quadrant system, and you can switch between many house systems right on the wheel. All positions are computed with the Swiss Ephemeris.

How accurate are the positions?

They are calculated with the Swiss Ephemeris, the same high-precision engine used by professional astrology software. Everything is deterministic, with no runtime AI and no rounding shortcuts.
