New Moon and Full Moon Meaning in Astrology

New moon and full moon meaning: the new moon is the Sun and Moon meeting, the full moon is them facing each other. Signs, houses and a simple monthly practice.

Quick answer: A new moon is the moment the Sun and Moon meet at the same point in the sky. Astrologers call this a conjunction. A full moon is the moment they stand exactly opposite each other, an opposition. The cycle repeats about every 29.5 days. Traditionally, the new moon marks beginnings and the full moon marks results and review.

The Moon follows the same routine every month. It appears as a thin crescent, grows, turns fully round, then shrinks and disappears. Behind this familiar sight is simple geometry: where the Sun, the Earth and the Moon stand in relation to each other. Astrology gives meaning to that geometry, and it pays most attention to two moments, the new moon and the full moon.

What is a new moon?

A new moon is the moment when the Sun and Moon sit in the same sign at the same degree. In astrology, two bodies meeting at the same point form a conjunction. The new moon is the monthly conjunction of the Sun and Moon.

At that moment the Moon is between the Earth and the Sun. Its sunlit side faces away from us, so you cannot see the Moon on the night of a new moon. A few days later a thin crescent shows up in the western sky after sunset. In everyday speech people often call that first crescent the "new moon", but in astrology the new moon is the dark moment of conjunction just before it.

Traditionally, the new moon is compared to a seed. The sky is dark and nothing shows yet. That is why it is read as a good moment to set an intention, start a habit or take the first step of a plan. Because the Sun and Moon share a sign, what you consciously want (the Sun) and what you emotionally need (the Moon) point in the same direction.

What is a full moon?

A full moon is the moment when the Sun and Moon stand exactly opposite each other, 180 degrees apart. In astrology, two bodies facing each other across the chart form an opposition.

At that moment the Earth sits between the Sun and the Moon, and the side of the Moon facing us is fully lit. The full moon rises around sunset and stays up all night.

Traditionally, the full moon is read as a peak. What started at the new moon tends to become visible. Emotions often run higher and events tend to come into the open. An opposition puts two sides next to each other: the Sun's sign wants one thing, the Moon's sign wants another. That is why the full moon is described as a time to find balance, finish something and let go of what no longer works. This is the symbolic language of the lunar cycle, not a prediction.

How long is the lunar cycle?

From one new moon to the next takes about 29.5 days. This is called the synodic month: the time the Moon needs to return to the same position relative to the Sun. The full moon falls roughly in the middle, about two weeks after the new moon.

Because 29.5 days is a little shorter than a calendar month, new and full moons slide a bit earlier in the calendar each month. Most years have 12 full moons, some have 13. A second full moon in the same calendar month is popularly called a "blue moon".

Between the new moon and the full moon, the Moon grows. This half is called the waxing moon and is traditionally read as a time to build, add and put in effort. After the full moon comes the waning half, described as a time to sort, simplify and rest.

What sign is the new moon or full moon in?

Finding the sign of a new moon is easy. Since the Sun and Moon are in the same place, a new moon always happens in the sign the Sun is in at that time. A new moon while the Sun is in Scorpio is a new moon in Scorpio. The Sun moves about one sign per month, so each new moon usually lands in the next sign.

The full moon works differently. The Moon is opposite the Sun, so the full moon happens in the sign opposite the Sun's sign. When the Sun is in Aries, the full moon is in Libra. When the Sun is in Taurus, the full moon is in Scorpio. The opposite pairs are Aries and Libra, Taurus and Scorpio, Gemini and Sagittarius, Cancer and Capricorn, Leo and Aquarius, Virgo and Pisces.

When astrologers read a new or full moon, they start with the sign. The sign works like the theme of that month. A new moon in Virgo, for example, is linked with order and daily routines. A full moon in Sagittarius is described as a peak around beliefs, travel and the bigger picture. A full moon is read through both signs together, because the opposition makes both ends visible.

Which house of your birth chart does it fall in?

The sign is the same for everyone. The house is what makes it personal. A birth chart is divided into twelve houses, and each house describes an area of life: money, home and family, relationships, work and so on. Our guide to the 12 houses explains each one.

Whatever house a new moon falls in for you, a fresh-start theme tends to come forward in that area of life that month. If the new moon is in your 10th house, career and visibility may come up. If it is in your 4th house, home and family may be in focus. The same logic applies to a full moon. The house it falls in is read as the area where something peaks or comes to completion. The opposite house joins in too, because the Sun is sitting there at that moment.

AstroAk charts use the Placidus house system. If a new or full moon lands very close to a house cusp (the line where one house begins), it may fall in the neighboring house in another system. Our article on house systems explains why.

Eclipses: special new and full moons

Not every new moon is a solar eclipse, and not every full moon is a lunar eclipse. The reason is that the Moon's orbit is slightly tilted compared with the Sun's yearly path. The Moon's path crosses the Sun's path at two points, called the lunar nodes.

When a new moon happens near one of the nodes, the Moon passes in front of the Sun and we get a solar eclipse. When a full moon happens near a node, the Earth's shadow falls on the Moon and we get a lunar eclipse. That is why eclipses come in groups, a few times a year, during "eclipse seasons" about six months apart.

In astrology, eclipses are read as stronger than an ordinary new or full moon. Traditionally they are linked with longer-lasting changes and turning points. You can find next year's eclipses with dates and signs in our post on eclipses in 2027.

Start at the new moon, review at the full moon

The simplest way to use the lunar cycle is a two-step rhythm: you start at the new moon and you check in at the full moon. You do not need special knowledge or a ritual for this. A notebook and a calendar are enough.

Around a new moon, look at the sign of that month and the house it falls in for you, and write down one or two small intentions. Clear, measurable intentions are easier to follow later. "I will walk three times a week" works better than "I will be healthier".

About two weeks later, at the full moon, go back to the same page. What moved forward? What got stuck? What needs to go? We walk through setting up this rhythm over a whole month in planning your month with the Moon.

This approach does not promise outcomes. What it gives you is a regular pause and a habit of looking at your own life.

How to find it in your own chart

You can see which area of life the next new or full moon points to in a few steps:

  • Create your free birth chart with your birth date, time and place.
  • Use the moon calendar to find the date, sign and degree of the next new or full moon.
  • Look for that sign and degree in your chart and see which house it falls in.
  • For a full moon, also note the opposite house, where the Sun is.
  • To see the whole year ahead, take a look at the full moon and new moon calendar 2027.

If you do not know your birth time, the houses will not be reliable. In that case, read the general theme from the sign alone.

New and full moons are the easiest cycle in astrology to follow. You can track them just by looking up at the sky. Every month brings one beginning and one peak, and getting to know that rhythm is a simple way to plan your month with more awareness.
