Quick answer: The Sun in the houses shows the area of life where you most want to express who you are. Your Sun sign describes how you shine, and the Sun's house describes where. With the Sun in the 10th house, career and public life tend to be the main stage. In the 4th house, home and family usually take that role.

Most people know their Sun sign. Fewer know that the Sun also sits in a house of the birth chart. A house is an area of life: work, family, relationships, money, friends and so on. The house your Sun falls in shows where you tend to put most of your energy and attention.

Every description below is a tendency, not a verdict. The rest of your chart always adds to the picture.

What does the Sun in a house mean?

The Sun is the center of your chart. It stands for your core identity, what you are proud of and what makes you feel alive. Your Sun sign gives that center its style. A Sun in Aries is quick and direct. A Sun in Cancer is protective and feeling.

The house is the stage. The same Aries Sun can be bold about earning money in the 2nd house, or lead a circle of friends in the 11th. So the sign answers "how" and the house answers "where." Read the two together and the picture gets much sharper.

How are the houses worked out?

The birth chart is divided into twelve houses. They are calculated from the place and time of your birth. That is why two people born on the same day can share a Sun sign but have the Sun in very different houses. For the basics of each house, see the 12 houses in astrology.

AstroAk charts use the Placidus house system, one of the most widely used systems. If your Sun sits very close to the line between two houses, called a cusp, it can land in the neighboring house in another system. In that case it makes sense to read both houses. The differences are explained in house systems in astrology.

The Sun in each of the 12 houses

Sun in the 1st house

With the Sun in the 1st house, you tend to be easy to notice. Who you are and how you come across are very close to each other. The urge to show yourself openly, take the first step and go your own way is strong. The shadow side is reading everything through yourself. If your Sun is in the 1st house, you were most likely born shortly before sunrise.

Sun in the 2nd house

The 2nd house covers what you own, what you earn and what you value. With the Sun here, you often define yourself through what you build and keep. Creating something with your own effort gives you confidence. Talents belong to this house too, so you may want to turn your skills into something concrete. The shadow side is measuring your self-worth only by your possessions.

Sun in the 3rd house

The 3rd house is about communication, learning, siblings and your close surroundings. With the Sun here, you often find yourself by talking, writing and asking questions. Curiosity runs high. Short trips, your neighborhood, school and your siblings can leave a mark on your identity. Fields that work with words, such as teaching, writing, journalism or sales, may feel natural. The shadow side is spreading your attention over too many topics.

Sun in the 4th house

The 4th house is home, family and roots. With the Sun here, your identity is closely tied to your family, your past and your home. You tend to come into your own in your private space, among people you trust. Building your own home or taking a central role in the family can be a big goal. With the Sun in the 4th house, you were usually born around midnight.

Sun in the 5th house

The 5th house is about creativity, play, romance and children. The Sun is at ease here, since the 5th house is traditionally linked with Leo and the Sun. You express yourself through art, hobbies, the stage or the joy you share with people you love. Being appreciated and getting attention does you good. The shadow side is always waiting for applause.

Sun in the 6th house

The 6th house is daily work, routine and service. With the Sun here, you often find yourself in your work and in the concrete help you give. A job done well brings real satisfaction. Creating order, improving a system and being useful to others come to the front. The shadow side is measuring your worth only by how hard you work and putting off rest.

Sun in the 7th house

The 7th house covers partnerships, marriage and one-to-one relationships. With the Sun here, you often get to know yourself best when you are with someone else. Partnership, cooperation and agreements sit at the center of life. The shadow side is defining yourself through your partner. With the Sun in the 7th house, you were usually born in the late afternoon, before sunset.

Sun in the 8th house

The 8th house covers shared resources, deep bonds, crises and transformation. With the Sun here, you do not like to stay on the surface. You want to know what lies underneath. Privacy, trust and closeness matter a great deal. Psychology, research or managing other people's resources can attract you. The shadow side is finding it hard to let go of control.

Sun in the 9th house

The 9th house is about beliefs, philosophy, long journeys and higher education. In traditional astrology this house is called the Sun's "joy." With the Sun here, you look for meaning in life. Learning, teaching, travel and getting to know other cultures feed you. Fields like academia, publishing or law may appeal. The shadow side is taking your own truth for the only truth.

Sun in the 10th house

The 10th house is career, public role and reputation. With the Sun here, you often define yourself through your profession and achievements. Being visible, getting things done and earning respect are key goals. The pull toward leadership and responsibility is strong. The shadow side can be sacrificing private life to work. With the Sun in the 10th house, you were usually born in the late morning, before the Sun reached its highest point.

Sun in the 11th house

The 11th house is friends, groups, community and hopes for the future. With the Sun here, you tend to express yourself best as part of a team or a community. Working toward a shared goal energizes you. Clubs, social projects and networks can play a big part in your life. The shadow side is losing your own voice inside the group.

Sun in the 12th house

The 12th house is retreat, the inner world and work done behind the scenes. With the Sun here, you often find yourself in quiet places, behind the scenes or when you are alone. Closed settings such as hospitals, art studios or spiritual spaces may feel meaningful. The shadow side is feeling invisible. With the Sun in the 12th house, you were most likely born shortly after sunrise.

How to read the Sun's sign and house together

Put the two facts into one sentence: sign first, then house. "Sun in Virgo" describes an identity that wants to be careful, orderly and useful. "Sun in the 10th house" says this identity wants to shine in a career. Together: someone who wants to be known at work as precise, reliable and good with details.

Here is one more example: Sun in Sagittarius, in the 4th house. Sagittarius looks for adventure and meaning, and the 4th house is home and family. This person may fill the home with other cultures, or sit at the center of lively family debates. The sign gives the color, the house gives the place.

How your birth time sets the Sun's house

The Sun's house depends directly on your birth time. There is a simple rule. If you were born during the day, the Sun is usually in a house above the horizon, somewhere from the 7th to the 12th. If you were born at night, it is in a house below the horizon, from the 1st to the 6th.

Over a day the order goes like this. At sunrise the Sun sits on the horizon. It then moves through the 12th, 11th and 10th houses and reaches its peak around midday. In the afternoon it passes through the 9th, 8th and 7th, then sets. At night it moves through the 6th, 5th and 4th, reaching its lowest point around midnight. Toward morning it passes the 3rd, 2nd and 1st and rises again. The Sun spends roughly two hours in each house on average, though this changes with season and latitude. So if your birth time is off by even a few minutes and the Sun is near a cusp, the house can change.

Find the Sun's house in your own chart

It takes just a few minutes:

  • Open the free birth chart tool.
  • Enter your birth date, time and place. The more accurate the time, the more accurate the house.
  • Find the Sun symbol (a circle with a dot in the middle) and check which house number it sits in.
  • If the Sun is within a few degrees of a house line, read both neighboring houses.
  • Then combine your Sun sign and house into one sentence, as shown above.

Final thoughts

The Sun's house is a simple clue to where you feel most alive. It is a direction, not a fate. Two people with the Sun in the same house can live it in very different ways. A good next step is the Moon in the houses. The Sun shows what makes you shine, and the Moon shows where you feel at ease.
