Which orb. A planet with its nearest aspect at nine degrees is unaspected under a seven-degree orb and aspected under a ten-degree one. This is the commonest reason a planet is called unaspected when it is not.
Which bodies. Aspects to the Ascendant, Midheaven, the nodes and Chiron are usually excluded from the count, because the classical definition concerns planet-to-planet contact. A planet conjunct the Ascendant and aspecting nothing else is unaspected by the strict definition and does not behave like one, which is a good sign the strict definition is doing something odd there.
The honest procedure is to state the orb and the aspect set first, then say whether the planet is unaspected under them. An aspect is a channel in two directions. It lets another planet moderate this one, and it lets this one express itself through another planet's territory. Remove every channel and you remove both. What is left is a planet that nothing restrains and nothing translates: it operates at full strength on its own terms, and it has no way of blending into the rest of the personality.
The usual description is all or nothing. The planet's affairs are either completely absent from a period of life or completely dominant, with little of the gradual mixing that aspects produce. People often describe the corresponding area as feeling separate: a compartment that does not connect to the rest of who they are.
Classical astrology has a related word for a Moon that makes no aspect before leaving its sign, which is void of course, and the reasoning is the same family: a body making no contact has nothing to hand its significations to.
What Still Shapes It
An unaspected planet is not unconditioned. Everything that is not an aspect still applies, and this is the part most readings skip.
Its dignity. Essential dignity is a relationship to a sign, not to another planet, so it survives untouched. An unaspected Venus in Taurus is a very different proposition from an unaspected Venus in Virgo: the first is unmoderated competence, the second unmoderated difficulty.
Its house. Where it sits still names the area of life the compartment belongs to, and how far it reaches. An unaspected planet in an angular house is a compartment everyone else runs into.
Its dispositor. The ruler of its sign still has a claim on it, and following that chain is the one remaining thread connecting it to the rest of the chart. Its sect. Whether it is in sect still describes how comfortably it operates.
Reading One in Practice
Four questions, in order:
- Is it actually unaspected? State your orb and aspect set. If the nearest contact is between seven and ten degrees, treat it as a weak aspect rather than none.
- Which planet is it? An unaspected Saturn and an unaspected Venus produce completely different lives. The planet's nature is the whole content.
- What is its condition? Dignity, house, sect. Unmoderated is not the same as ungoverned.
- Where does its dispositor sit? That is the door the compartment opens onto.
Then read it as its own paragraph rather than folding it into the rest. That is not a stylistic choice: it is what the chart is doing.
The Honest Limits
This is a reading habit rather than a doctrine with ancient sources behind it. The classical authors discuss planets in aversion, planets void of course and planets unconnected to the Ascendant, and those are related but not identical ideas; the modern category of the unaspected natal planet crystallised in the twentieth century. It earns its place because it describes something readers recognise, not because Ptolemy named it.
And it says nothing about outcome. An unaspected planet describes a part of a personality that runs on its own circuit. Whether that becomes a gift or a difficulty is not in the geometry.
