Planetary Dignities: Where Each Planet Is Strong or Weak

In astrology each planet has signs of domicile, exaltation, detriment and fall. This system, the dignity table, is the spine of classical astrology and tells you whether a planet is working in strength or strain.

When you start learning to read a birth chart, you notice this: the same planet works completely differently in two different charts. The reason is not only aspects and houses; the sign a planet sits in also decides its "strength." Classical astrology calls this "dignity." Each planet has specific signs of domicile, exaltation, detriment and fall. This article opens the dignity table.

What the Dignity System Says

Dignity is Latin for "worth." In astrology it tells you how well-suited a planet's sign is to its nature. Five main types: domicile (home), exaltation, detriment, fall, and the neutral state.

A planet in its domicile is "at home," it works strong and natural. In its exaltation it is "raised up," and shows the optimistic side of its function. In detriment it is "in exile," and shows its function under strain. In fall it is "fallen," and shows its function at its weakest. The classification traces to Ptolemy's table in the second century and has been used for nearly nineteen centuries.

The Classical Rulership Table

Classical astrology works with seven planets and twelve signs. Rulerships are:

The Sun rules Leo, is exalted in Aries, in detriment in Aquarius, in fall in Libra. The Moon rules Cancer, is exalted in Taurus, in detriment in Capricorn, in fall in Scorpio. Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo, is also exalted in Virgo, in detriment in Sagittarius and Pisces, in fall in Pisces. Venus rules Taurus and Libra, is exalted in Pisces, in detriment in Scorpio and Aries, in fall in Virgo. Mars rules Aries and Scorpio, is exalted in Capricorn, in detriment in Libra and Taurus, in fall in Cancer. Jupiter rules Sagittarius and Pisces, is exalted in Cancer, in detriment in Gemini and Virgo, in fall in Capricorn. Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius, is exalted in Libra, in detriment in Cancer and Leo, in fall in Aries.

Modern astrology adds the three outer planets: Uranus rules Aquarius, Neptune rules Pisces, Pluto rules Scorpio. But classical dignity is read primarily through the seven traditional planets.

Domicile

When a planet sits in its own sign, it works strongest and most freely. The planet's nature and the sign's nature line up, and the planet expresses its theme without obstruction. Mars in Aries fully expresses its warrior nature. Venus in Taurus fully carries its sensual-valuing nature. Saturn in Capricorn does its structure-building most solidly.

If a planet of yours sits in its own sign, the function it represents flows strong and natural in your life. It becomes an area of "real talent."

Exaltation

Exaltation is close to domicile but a more "optimistic" position. A planet in its exalted sign shows the brightest, most idealistic side of its nature. Jupiter in Cancer brings "great benefit" through emotional generosity. The Moon in Taurus holds emotional steadiness. The Sun in Aries does its initiative as heroism.

Exaltation runs slightly "amplified," so it carries both strength and a touch of overstatement. Domicile is "natural," exaltation is "in a higher tone."

Detriment and Fall

Detriment is a planet sitting opposite to its own sign. Mars rules Aries, so Mars's detriment is Libra. A planet in detriment expresses its nature under strain, because the sign it occupies is the opposite of its nature. Mars in Libra has to negotiate instead of fight, which feels uncomfortable but also matures it.

Fall is the opposite of exaltation, a sharper weakness. Jupiter is exalted in Cancer, so Jupiter in Capricorn is in fall. A planet in fall feels its nature "dimmed." Saturn in Aries (opposite Libra) has to build structure with haste and harshness.

Reading Dignity in Practice

When you look at your chart, the signs your planets sit in clarify your bodily and psychological themes through dignity. In a classical medical astrology reading, the position of Saturn decides your structural health signature. Saturn in Capricorn or Aquarius (its own signs) produces strong bone structure; in Cancer or Leo (its detriment), structural sensitivity.

Likewise, Venus in Taurus runs as strong chemistry; in Scorpio (detriment) as intense but strained attraction. The Moon in Cancer is a strong emotional constitution; in Scorpio (fall), an intense but tense emotional baseline.

Dignity Is Not the Final Word

Important note: dignity is an indicator, not a verdict. Planets in detriment are often life's most instructive areas; planets in fall produce deep wisdom over time. "I have a Mars in detriment, is that bad?" is the wrong question. The right one: "what is my Mars in detriment teaching me?"

Many great historical figures carry weakly dignified planets, and the central themes of their lives gather around those planets. Astrology gives a map, not a judgement.

Recognising Dignity in Your Life

Three steps. First, know the signs of your planets. Second, find their dignity in the table above. Third, combine with house position and aspects to form a personal theme.

Where the Sun tells you who you are and the Moon how you heal, the dignity table tells you in which tone each of your planets is playing. If you know your birth time, you can see the dignity of all your planets at a glance with our free birth chart tool.
