Part of Fortune
The Part of Fortune, or Lot of Fortune, is a calculated point measured from the Ascendant by the distance between the Sun and Moon, and it is the best known of the classical lots.
The formula reverses by sect: in a day chart it is the Ascendant plus the Moon minus the Sun, and in a night chart the Sun and Moon swap places. Getting sect wrong puts the point in the wrong half of the chart, which is why our reports establish sect first.
Traditional sources link it to the body, livelihood and the tangible side of fortune rather than to luck in the modern sense.
Frequently asked
Does the formula really change at night?
In traditional practice yes, and it is one of the clearest places where sect changes the arithmetic rather than the interpretation.
Is the Part of Fortune a planet?
No. It is a calculated point, like the Ascendant, and it casts no aspects of its own in strict traditional practice.
