What the Gauquelins actually did

Michel Gauquelin was a psychologist and statistician who set out, by his own account, to demonstrate that astrology did not work. He and Françoise Gauquelin, a statistician, spent decades collecting birth records of eminent professionals from public registries across Europe, thousands upon thousands of them, with exact recorded times.

Then they did something unusual. Instead of testing signs, they divided the daily circle, the path a planet traces from rising to culminating to setting, into sectors, and asked whether a given planet fell into some sectors more often than chance allowed for a given profession.

The signs showed nothing. The aspects showed nothing. What appeared instead was a pattern in the sectors.

The finding

Their headline result was that eminent sports champions were born with Mars in two particular zones more often than expected: shortly after it rose over the eastern horizon, and shortly after it crossed the Midheaven. The Gauquelins called these the plus zones.

The effect sizes were small. They were not the sort of thing that shows up in a person's life; they were the sort of thing that shows up in a few thousand birth records when you count carefully. Gauquelin himself was consistent about this and repeatedly said his results did not support ordinary astrological practice.

The replication wars

What happened next is the part worth reading about.

The Belgian Comité Para, a scientific committee formed to investigate paranormal claims, ran its own test in the 1960s and 1970s. It found the same raw distribution in its own sample, and then disputed the calculation of what chance would have predicted, arguing that the expected frequencies were wrong rather than the counts. The disagreement was never resolved to either side's satisfaction.

The American test and the sTARBABY affair. In the late 1970s a group associated with the newly formed committee for the scientific investigation of claims of the paranormal ran a test on American sports champions and reported no effect. One of its own members, Dennis Rawlins, subsequently published a long and bitter account, titled sTARBABY, alleging that the committee had mishandled the analysis, had seen a positive signal in a subgroup, and had presented a cleaner story than its own data supported. Whatever one concludes about the Mars effect, that episode is a case study in how a group committed to debunking can fail its own standards.

The French CFEPP study, a long-running attempt at a definitive replication with a freshly gathered sample, published its results in the 1990s and found no effect.

Suitbert Ertel, a German psychologist, reanalysed the pooled data using an eminence ranking and argued that the effect grew stronger the more eminent the athlete. Critics answered that a ranking devised after seeing the data can manufacture a gradient out of noise, which is a fair objection and one Ertel disputed at length.

The most likely mundane explanation

The explanation critics kept returning to is not fraud. It is that recorded birth times are not a clean sample of when births happen.

Times get rounded. Registrars record what they are told. In some periods and places births were induced, delayed or recorded at administratively convenient hours, and the practice varied by country, decade and social class, which is precisely the sort of thing that could tilt a distribution against the daily circle without any planet being involved. Gauquelin argued against this at length and ran tests he believed excluded it. The argument was never settled, and it cannot be settled retroactively on data collected the way it was.

What it did not support, and why that matters

It is tempting for astrologers to hold this up as evidence. It is worth being precise about what would be being claimed.

The Gauquelin data did not support sun signs, which is the astrology almost everyone means by the word. It did not support aspects. It did not support the twelve signs at all. What it pointed at, if it pointed at anything, was the diurnal position of a planet relative to the horizon and the meridian, which is the oldest and least fashionable part of the tradition.

There is a genuine curiosity in where the peaks fell. Classical astrology treats the four angles as the strongest places in a chart, and a planet on them as loud. The Gauquelin peaks were not exactly on the angles but just past them in the direction of daily motion, which by quadrant house division falls in the twelfth and ninth houses. Those are houses the tradition generally calls weak. Some astrologers have reconciled this by pointing to the older doctrine that a planet advancing toward an angle is gaining strength, and a planet that has just risen is in exactly that condition. That is a reasonable reading, but it is a reading applied afterwards, and it should be labelled as one.

The honest verdict

The Mars effect is not established. Independent replication is the standard, and the replication record is mixed at best and negative at worst. Anyone presenting it as scientific proof of astrology is overstating it considerably.

It is also not a hoax, and the committees that set out to bury it did not cover themselves in glory. The most defensible position is that a small anomaly was reported, a great deal of effort went into confirming and refuting it, and the effort produced disagreement about method rather than a settled answer.
