Quick answer: In classical medical astrology Jupiter rules the liver, the blood, the fat that the body lays down and the growth of tissue. Its risk is excess rather than lack, which makes it the odd one out in the series.
Saturn covered structure and bone; the Moon, fluid and rhythm; Mars, muscle and acute heat; Venus, skin and hormonal balance; Mercury, nerve and breath; the Sun, heart and vital force. Jupiter closes the series, and it is the only one where the classical caution runs the other way.
What Jupiter Rules in the Body
Classical medical astrology gives Jupiter four charges, and they hang together around one idea: increase.
The liver. This is the assignment the whole tradition agrees on, from Galen through the Arabic authors to Culpeper. In humoral physiology the liver is where nutrition becomes blood, so it is the organ of conversion and increase rather than of filtering, which is how modern medicine reads it. Both descriptions are about the same organ doing the same work; they name it differently.
The blood. Not the arterial push, which is the Sun's, but the substance itself and its quantity. Jupiter owns the sanguine humour, hot and moist, and the classical texts treat abundant good blood as the sign of a well-run constitution.
Fat and the laying down of tissue. The body's storage. Jupiter is the planet of growth in every domain it touches, and in the body that means the tissue that accumulates rather than the tissue that acts.
The hips and thighs, and the feet. Sagittarius takes the hips and thighs on the body map, Pisces the feet, and both are Jupiter's signs in the classical scheme. The thigh is the body's largest store of muscle and fat together, which fits the rest of the assignment.
The Risk Is Surplus, Not Shortage
This is what makes Jupiter different from the other six. With Saturn the classical worry is depletion, with Mars it is inflammation, with the Moon it is instability. With Jupiter the worry is plethora: too much good blood, too much stored tissue, an appetite the constitution can afford right up until it cannot.
The older authors are unsentimental about it. Jupiter is the Greater Benefic and they still wrote that an unchecked Jupiter produces the conditions of abundance, which in a body means the liver working harder than it should and a constitution that expands past its own frame. A benefic is not a promise, in health as in anything else.
Jupiter in Your Birth Chart
Jupiter's sign, house and condition shape how the increase runs.
In Sagittarius or Pisces, its own signs, Jupiter runs freely and tradition reads good blood, strong recovery from illness and a constitution that tolerates a lot. In Cancer, its exaltation, it runs most generously of all, with the fluid and nourishing side emphasised. In Gemini or Virgo, its detriment, the expansive function works through detail and analysis and can turn into scattered appetite or digestive fussiness. In Capricorn, its fall, increase is rationed, which classical practice reads as a constitution that grows slowly and holds what it gets.
The house says where the increase shows. In the sixth it goes into the daily regimen, for good or ill; in the second, into what the body stores; in the twelfth, into what accumulates unseen.
Constitution by Jupiter Sign
Each Jupiter sign carries the increase differently. Aries: fast growth, heat-forward, appetite that arrives suddenly. Taurus: steady accumulation, throat, a real pull toward richness. Gemini (detriment): scattered appetite, breath and shoulders, growth in fits. Cancer (exaltation): the most nourishing Jupiter, fluid and digestion, easy weight gain. Leo: generous circulation, heart and back, expansive output. Virgo (detriment): analytical appetite, gut, growth checked by scrutiny. Libra: appetite balanced against others, kidneys, richness through pleasure. Scorpio: concentrated increase, eliminative organs, all or nothing. Sagittarius (domicile): the strongest Jupiter signature, hips and thighs, high tolerance and high intake. Capricorn (fall): rationed growth, knees and skin, slow to gain and slow to lose. Aquarius: irregular increase, circulation to the extremities. Pisces (domicile): the most fluid Jupiter, lymph and feet, permeable and easily saturated.
Jupiter and Temperament
Jupiter is hot and moist, which is the sanguine signature exactly. In your temperament distribution a prominent Jupiter pushes the mixture toward the sanguine: warm surface, good colour, ready digestion, an easy relationship with food and sleep. The sanguine temperament article sets out the type in full, and the four humours piece gives the framework it sits in.
In excess the classical caution is plethora rather than heat: the sanguine constitution in surplus was treated by reduction, which is the reasoning behind the old practice of seasonal bloodletting. Astrological nutrition reads a sanguine excess as asking for drying and lightening food, and astrological movement matches Jupiter to sustained, rhythmic exertion that moves a lot of blood without spiking it.
The Jupiter Return
Jupiter comes back to its natal place about every twelve years, near the ages of 12, 24, 36, 48 and on. It is the mildest of the slow returns, and in a health reading it is not a crisis point but a checkpoint for whatever Jupiter governs in your chart. The Jupiter return calculator will place yours exactly.
Jupiter retrograde, about four months in every year, is read in the older texts as a period when the expansive function turns inward. Classical practice does not treat it as a health event.
Living With a Jupiter Constitution
Three practices, and all three are about proportion rather than restriction.
Match intake to output. The classical objection is never to abundance itself, only to abundance that nothing draws on. A Jupiter constitution does well with generous input and equally generous expenditure, and badly with the first alone.
Give the liver its rhythm. The humoral reading of the liver is an organ that converts, and conversion needs pauses as much as it needs supply. Long gaps between meals were standard in the older regimens for exactly this reason.
Take the tolerance seriously. A strong Jupiter tolerates a great deal, which is a genuine advantage and the specific way the type gets into trouble: the signal arrives late. Where a Saturnine constitution complains early, a Jupiterian one does not complain until the margin is gone.
Reading Jupiter in Practice
Three steps. First, find Jupiter's sign and house. Second, read it against the sign on your sixth house, which is where the daily management of the body is described. Third, check the body map for the region Jupiter is working on.
Where Saturn tells you what holds you up and the Sun what you are working with, Jupiter tells you how your body handles more of anything. Your Jupiter sign is where to start, and with a birth time you can see the whole arrangement in our free birth chart tool.
This is a historical framework for reading a chart, not medical advice. Anything you are worried about belongs with a doctor.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does Jupiter rule in medical astrology?
Jupiter governs the liver, the blood as substance, the fat and tissue the body lays down, and through its signs the hips, thighs and feet. All four cluster around one idea, which is increase.
Why is Jupiter's health risk excess rather than weakness?
Because Jupiter's function is to increase, and the classical texts treat an unchecked increase as plethora: too much blood, too much stored tissue, an appetite the constitution can carry until it cannot. It is the one planet in the series where surplus rather than shortage is the caution.
Does a well-placed Jupiter guarantee good health?
No. Tradition reads a strong Jupiter as high tolerance and good recovery, which is an advantage and also the way the type gets caught out, because a body that tolerates a lot signals late.
